Social safety nets, social Darwinism, money and morals. how does it all fit together?

Through a bit of bad luck and turn of fate any one of us through no fault of our own could be turned into one of those "bottom feeders". I gladly pay taxes today to help someone else out knowing that some day I too may be looking to them for a hand. I also realize that helping that person today helps the economy and lessens the likelihood that the rest of us may some day need the same help.
