Did wives in the 50s to 70s really come to bed every night in those great silky nighties you see in the movies?

I had a beautiful one when I got married and kept wearing it forever. It was a beautiful white one with a robe and lots of lace. I bought some more that were nice too, but I got most of them on sale at a store downtown. I could find the nicest gowns there. I worked too, so I liked to look nice even though we had two children.
