Why do rabbits lick when scratched?

Whenever my rabbit is sitting in my lap relaxing, I will give him massages and sometimes scratch him...and then almost on cue, he will start licking my legs. Does anyone know why? I know that they lick to show compassion and thanks but this is kind of different. Thanks!
