Is there vehicle purchasing assistance for cancer patients out there?

My wife was diagnosed with leukemia less than 2 years ago, and is on disability. I have just recently been diagnosed with and undergone surgery for a very aggressive stage 4 thyroid cancer and have no income. Disability still pending as this just occurred a few weeks ago. We are financially destitute now and have a 4 hour round trip commute to the cancer center. My vehicle is unreliable and sucks too much gas. Is there any program out there that is designed to assist people in desperate situations like ours? This is real life! I can't even imagine how we are going to survive this in the long run, but any helpful suggestions are very welcome! Thank you!
