Imagine there is no welfare, you are widowed, destitute, with a small baby. Would you consider abandoning it?

No I would steal barter and beg before I gave my child away... I would not give up my child ever.. however I would give it to someone before abandoning it. I think abandoning a child would be a sign of a person whom is less educated in the ways our system is in place... how about if you have to abandon the child you do so at the doors of a church/community centre or some place she can ensure her child is found by someone....
